How does the USB feature help protect my data and how can I enable it?

USB or flash drives enable users to save and share data from one device to another making it a popular, portable business tool. This same device however can be programmed to steal your data or transfer a virus or malicious code. This feature, once enabled, can help protect your data in two ways:

  1. It encrypts your data. After you enable it, you can format your flash drive so that it is paired to your specific device. Should you lose the drive, no problem. The drive can only be read on your laptop.
  2. It blocks untrusted activity. Should an unauthorized user attempt to plug in a USB drive, the device will reject it. This feature adds a layer of protection against data theft and malicious code.

Here’s how to set up the feature:

  1. Launch BIOS-SHIELD
  2. Select USB (USB can now be configured by filtering in three different ways)
    1. Option 1: Allow all devices:

        1. Audio
        2. Printer
        3. Smart Card Reader
        4. Storage
        5. Vendor-specific

Once set, this feature allows you restore your data quickly. We strongly recommend that laptop owners create a “golden image” within the first few days of initial set up and store it as the control version. You can also set up a daily option to capture the most recent image of your hard drive. Once set, the system is able to restore the user to either the last recorded saved image or the previously recorded “golden image”.

Here’s how to set up the Snapshot option:
